Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is located in the central parts of Kenya’s Rift Valley region about 160 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, the park is one of the country’s best tourism destinations because of its ecologically diverse system. The park is well known for its stunning landscapes and biodiversity due to the significant conservation work done here. The park derives its name from “Lake Nakuru” which is a shallow lake with alkaline water that serves as a habitat for a variety of birds but most notably “the pink Flamingos”. The park is made up of Lake Nakuru, savannah grasslands, woodlands and cliffs which provide for a stunning view for game watching.
Background of Lake Nakuru National Park.
The park was established in 1961 when it was gazetted as a national park covering a total area of 188 square kilometers around the famous Lake Nakuru and Nakuru town. The park started off small covering the lake and the surrounding mountainous areas but it has since expanded to include large parts of the nearby savannah lands. The park is best known for its thousands to millions of Flamingos that nest along the shores of the lake. From a distance, the surface of the lake looks outstanding with the striking pink color of the flamingos that stay around the waters. The lake has provided for the flamingos hence their ever presence. The park has recently been enlarged further to provide a sanctuary home to the protected Giraffes and Blank and white rhinos; a fence was put up to stop poachers from hunting down the endangered mammals. With these endeavors, the number of eastern black rhinos has gone up which is a real sign of the conservation efforts.
