Located in the central highlands of Kenya, Mount Kenya National Park is a breathtaking landscape with highlands that oozes beauty with the mountain that is Africa’s second-highest peak. Vegetation of the Park

The Peaks of Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya has three main peaks; Batian, Nelion, and Lenana. Batian is the highest at 5,199 meters then followed by Nelion at 5,188 meters and then the Lanana peak which stands at 4985 meters. The first two peaks are for experienced hikers and trekkers and then Lanana is accessible for most with medium experience without the need for advanced climbing skills.
The trek to Point Lenana offers stunning views of the park and gives hikers a sense of achievement that is hard to match. The journey to Lanana requires you to trek for about 3 to 5 days and that depends on which route you take to get there; two optional routes the Sirimon, naro moru and chogoria routes. The Glaciers and Rivers of Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is one of the few mountains in Africa with Glaciers and even though they rapidly shrink because of Kenya’s extreme weather. The Lewis glaciers are the largest on the mountain, the melting glaciers are a water source to many of the rivers and lakes within the park including the Naro Moru and Burguret glaciers that flow down providing water to the communities and wildlife around the park. Trekking and Hiking

Trekking and hikes are the most popular activity in Mount Kenya National Park for being a mountain National Park. There are several treks that you can choose from and routes which are tailored based on your physical level of fitness. The Sirimon Route is considered the easiest and most scenic offering a gradual ascent up through forest lushes and moorlands. The Naro Moru Route, this is the shortest and steepest passing through the infamous Vertical Bog and Mackinder’s Valley. It requires you to have a high level of physical fitness and hiking skills.  The Chogoria Route is the most dramatic with stunning views of the Gorges Valley and Lake Michaelson but still requires you to be an experienced hiker and of high physical fitness.

The park also offers many short hikes that you can take on like day hikes just midway and get the stunning views of the park from an elevated height.

Climbing

For experienced climbers, with Mount Kenya offering some of the most challenging but rewarding climbs in Africa, it’s a nice place to come around and test your skills and expertise.

The technical hard ascents of Batian and Nelion are not for the faint-hearted and require one to have advanced climbing skills and equipment. However, when you make it to the top you are rewarded with a breathtaking view and the idea of conquering one of Africa’s greatest challenges of a mountain to hike.

Best Time to Visit Mount Kenya National Park

However there are predominantly two seasons to consider with the dry seasons, from January to March and from July to October.  The weather during this time is ideal for trekking and climbing as the weather is generally clear and the trails are less muddy. In contrast the wet seasons which are from April to June and from November to December bring heavy rains that can make trekking and climbing more challenging, it’s muddy and slippery. However during this time the park is full of lush and full of life providing for a beautiful scenic view. We have  Land cruisers each driven by professionally trained driver guides and fuel. They have pop-up roofs for proper game viewing and photography. Getting to Mount Kenya National Park

Mount Kenya National Park is easily accessible from Nairobi with a well maintained road from the city to the park which makes it a popular destination.  There are several options for getting to the park and here they are;

By Road

This is by far the most common way to reach Mount Kenya National Park. The drive to the park is approximately a 3 to 4-hour drive from Nairobi depending on traffic and the route taken. The main entry gates to the park are;

By Air

If you opt to not drive, flights are available and they are daily from Wilson Airport to Nanyuki Airstrip which is the closest to the park.
