You may cross streams and navigate steep, muddy, and thick terrain. Please note that the southern part of Bwindi in Nkuringo lies the highest altitudinal point of the forest.
  • Expected Natural behavior: Since these mountain gorillas are only semi-habituated, but on a journey to be fully habituated with mock exercises conducted and approved, their behavior is less predictable. Mock charges from a silverback are possible and are a normal part of the process. Ensure to adhere to set guidelines by your researchers and ranger guides.
  • Observation and learning: The accompanying team of researchers and rangers will provide great insights into gorilla behavior, way of living and answer questions. You will observe the gorillas as they feed, play, groom, and build their nests during your four hours with them.
  • Video and Photography: The four hours spent with mountain gorillas during this experience allow for more photographic and video shooting opportunities, and photographers often favor this option. Flash photography is strictly prohibited.
  • Full-day activity: The entire gorilla habituation experience trek can take a full day but once you find the family, you will be allowed to spend four hours studying, observing, and taking photographs/videos.
  • Participatory Role: Unlike the standard gorilla trekking which involves only observing and taking photographs, gorilla habituation experience will get you involved in picking samples, calling, as you participate in the daily activities that researchers do to make sure that these wild gorillas get used to the presence of human beings.
  • Other wildlife Encounters: Besides mountain gorillas, you might encounter other primates and birds resident in Bwindi, and ranger guides will be in your accompany for protection against potential encounters with other animals like elephants. So a visit to Bwindi is more than mountain gorillas.
